A readable introduction to some of the most extraordinary, but mysterious, writings in the Hebrew Scriptures.

Christians hear selections from the biblical prophets read regularly at worship, especially during Advent and Christmas. Many, however, know little about these men or the 15 biblical books that bear their names. Prevost (scripture, St. Paul's Univ., Ottawa) aims to give readers a start in actually reading and appreciating the prophets. He first situates each prophet in historical context. Then he discusses three key texts from each. These are not necessarily the best-known or most popular texts, but they do give the reader insights into each prophet's experience of God. Chapter titles are revealing: "Amos: The 'Roaring' Voice," "Hosea: Witness to a Crazy Love," and "Ezekiel: The Visionary of Glory." This well-written work is highly recommended for any library with basic religion collections.?John Moryl, Yeshiva Univ. Lib., New York
