This book brings together cutting-edge research on multimodal texts and the 'discourses' generated through the interaction of two or more semiotic modes of communication including language, dynamic and static visual images, architecture, electronic media, film and print. This includes the study of transition and phase, camera and body movement, typography, layout and the use of colour, and how such choices orientate the viewer to particular readings of the text and context. The result is a comprehensive survey of the ways in which enhanced meaning emerges through the interaction of more than one mode of communication.

Review:

'...It is in this capacity - as a public forum for diverse and often competing theoretical notions - that the three books can be considered valuable extenstions of, and contributions to, the academic field of multimodality...O'Halloran's volume presents much the state of play in SFL/multimodality research...Multimodal Discourse Analysis is an outstanding volume that simply takes time to get acquainted...theories and frameowrks are outlined in great depth and with a high level of skill...but there is much to commend in O'Halloran's book. (Odysseas Constantinou Journal Of Sociolinguistics)

'This edited volume presents a collection of research papers that is both diverse and stimulating. The organisation of topics into three types of multimodal discourse allows readers to identify some of the key concerns and questions that are specific to particular types of multimodal discourse...the book...presents some challenging questions in relation to multimodal staus...it offers theoretical resources that allow us to talk and think about different types of communicative texts.
