Synopsis
In his introduction, editor John A. Garraty questions any distinction between "popular" and "scholarly" history and submits that there are as many different kinds of history as there are historians. If that is the case, then this volume contains over two dozen kinds of history, all of them focused on the United States after the Civil War (up to 1969). Compiling arguably some of the best articles from the distinguished periodical "American Heritage", the reader will find many thought-provoking and illuminating stories from the Reconstruction Era through JFK and the 1960s.
