THE AMERICAN BUREACRACY is well known and widely respected for presenting a fair, balanced, and concise treatment of the U.S. Bureaucracy. Its never-cynical approach to the history, trends, and future of the American Bureaucracy has won it very high regard. Thorough attention is given to the study of how the government works to provide a multitude of services and protection to the American people, and current literature, charts, and data are incorporated and synthesized into the text.

About the Author:
Richard J. Stillman II received his Ph.D. from the Maxwell School, Syracuse University, and is a Professor of Public Administration at the University of Colorado at Denver. He has written and edited books on various aspects of Public Bureaucracy and its management, such as PREFACE TO THE PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, THE MODERN STATE AND ITS STUDY, and PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION: CONCEPTS AND CASES. His books have been translated into Chinese, Korean, and Hungarian. He was awarded the William E. and Frederick C. Mosher prize for his scholarship in the field, and has received a number of fellowships: NASA University Fellow at Syracuse University, Public Administration Fellow and Research Fellow at the Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, Robinson Fellow at George Mason University, and elected fellow at the National Academy of Public Administration.
Review:
"This is an extraordinarily good textbook. It is one of the finest I have read in any field of government and politics."

"It is a short and well-written introduction to the topic that covers briefly most of the topics I want to cover in an introductory class...It dispels many of the myths about government that many students bring to the class while, at the same time, covering much of the relevant material."

"Not surprisingly, Chapter 7 is excellent because Dr. Stillman is the best contemporary writer on PA's (Public Administration) intellectual history."
