Lockheed's ubiquitous C-130 Hercules is one of the most widely used aircraft ever produced. It has formed the backbone of the U.S. Air Force's Military Airlift Command for over a quarter of a century. The scope of this book includes all special purposes (non-cargo) uses of the Hercules by United States military and civil users While there may be some short-lived one-of-a-kind uses of the Hercules that are not covered, major special purpose program are included with one notable exception. Three airframes were specially modifies to take-off and land in a very short distance, with the intention being to use them to extract the American hostages in Iran. While we were able to take photographs we have been asked not to publish them.
