The ephemeral nature of theater has always provided absurd challenges to the cadre of curators and scholars who seek its documentation and preservation. Theater historian Nelson-Cave helps fight the good archival fight by parading 113 years of Broadway poster art in this oversized but sleek volume. A generously illustrated introductory narrative traces both significant developments in New York theater and the evolution of the poster from advertising medium to an interpretive vehicle for the production. The stars--and there are over 80--are the beautifully lush, full-page color reproductions of theater posters tastefully selected to highlight significant productions, milestones, and achievements in Broadway theater. As delightful as this book is--and all theater research collections should consider its purchase mandatory--a more appropriate selection for general collections is Mary C. Henderson's all-encompassing Broadway Ballyhoo (Abrams, 1989).
