Updating the well-received first edition (Bowker, 1981), this new second edition provides honest and frank news of guides to travel both in the U.S. and abroad, published both here and abroad. All reviews are done from the reader's point of view; each suggests the possible audience for the guide, how well it is written, the presence or absence of information about phone and fax numbers, addresses, credit card usage, prices, handicapped accessibility, etc. This volume reviews unique and individual guides, as well as those that appear annually and in series. Some of the guides from the earlier edition have been reviewed again if they are still in print.

From Booklist:

Originally published in 1981, this annotated bibliography provides critical evaluations of a selection of travel guides for most parts of the world. This second edition really is the second volume in a series. It covers publications from 1982 through 1990; the first edition stopped at 1981. Generally, the organization and format of both editions is identical. Only a few titles from the original volume have later editions listed here; most of the titles in the second edition are new.

Unlike the first edition, this one contains no prefatory material, furthering the impression of a continuation rather than a new edition. After a chapter on general guides and pretravel reading, chapters are arranged by continent and then country, or, in the case of the U.S., by state. The authors offer brief summaries for each book, followed by their own critical evaluations, which seem careful, honest, straightforward, and reliable. The index is cursory. It includes some book titles, but not all of them. It would appear that some important series, such as Lonely Planet, are not listed here.

Although this book might be considered out-of-date because it lists no titles newer than 1990, it is a recommended purchase for general travel collections as an excellent source for novice travelers. The Travel Book also reflects the various types of travel guides available, though it is not current enough to be used for collection development.
