The Reader's Adviser , Vol. 3 (Bowker, 1977. 12th ed.) dealt with science in a single chapter. This edition expands that coverage to an entire volume edited by Durbin (University of Delaware), with individual chapters contributed by 24 writers, professors, and librarians with subject bibliography expertise. The work aims to foster technological literacy among lay people or experts reading outside their field. Bibliographies in 20 subject fields include reference works, textbooks, and popularizations. Short annotations are included for most citations. Some landmark titles are listed despite being out of print; but the majority are currently available and include imprints through mid-1987. Since each contributing editor approached the bibliographic task differently, the 20 major chapters reflect distinct viewpoints and personalities. Decisions about what to include and exclude seem quirky at times. Nevertheless, this volume is exhaustive, reasonably authoritative, and will be useful in most general reference collections.
