With more than five million people in the United States living with Alzheimer's disease and nearly ten million loved ones caring for them, addressing the concerns of these elders and their caregivers is a matter of increasing importance. Relying on their many years of experience in this area, Jane Thibault and Richard Morgan offer this book to provide a fresh, hopeful model of dealing with life and death in the realm of Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Caregivers have two basic needs: affirmation that caregiving is not in vain and reassurance that the lives of those for whom they care are not being lived in vain. Care receivers need more than medical attention; they need tender care, involvement in the community, and a sense of connection with a loving God. When patient and caregiver regard this shared experience as a "mutual spiritual path," each plays a role in deepening the spiritual life of the other. No Act of Love Is Ever Wasted is an excellent resource for individuals caring for loved ones as well as for counselors, support group leaders, pastors, and other professionals. In addition to offering practical ways to help, this book serves as a reminder that every act of love brings positive transformation to the recipient, to the giver, and to the world.

About the Author:

Richard L. Morgan is a retired Presbyterian minister and has served as chaplain in hospitals, retirement communities and nursing homes. He and wife, Alice Ann Morgan, reside at Redstone Highlands retirement community in Pennsylvania, where he does volunteer work in pastoral care with Alzheimer's and other dementia residents and also serves as co-facilitator of an Alzheimer's Support Group. Morgan also leads seminars and programs in the area on Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. He is the author of several Upper Room titles.
Jane Marie Thibault, a clinical gerontologist, is an associate professor of Family and Geriatric Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. In addition, she offers workshops and retreats on spirituality and aging and provides spiritual direction to older adults.

Review:

This book wonderfully addresses the needs created by the terrible epidemic of lives and minds being destroyed by Alzheimer s disease and other dementing illnesses. The authors open our eyes to the spiritual options of dealing with all those affected by dementia. This little book puts a new, restorative option into the caring of, and love for, those with or affected by dementia, where God fits into this equation, and how each of us can rethink our path in this process. --Lois W. Lutz, MS Alzheimer Education and Outreach Coordinator Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

What a wonderful gift Richard Morgan and Jane Thibault offer caregivers. Each has previously contributed in major ways to our understanding of spirituality and aging, and here they combine their experience and expertise to create a timely work of loving integration. Biblically grounded and rich in practical suggestions, their book will bring comfort and hope to all those caring for loved ones with dementia. By means of moving personal stories, the authors invite each of us to live from the spiritual convictions crucial to such care: the abiding worth of every human person and the enduring power of even the smallest act of love. --Kathleen Fischer, PhD, MSW; author of Winter Grace: Spirituality and Aging; psychotherapist and spiritual director, Seattle, Washington

While reading No Act of Love is Ever Wasted I was moved by the amount of caring and love the authors conveyed. Their rich understanding of dementia, particularly Alzheimer s disease, and the journey caregivers endure is evident from the personal examples cited throughout the text. The perspective that caregiving is an extension of spiritual life will aid families and professionals to look beyond day-to-day routines and chores and accept their role as an opportunity to serve the total person in body, mind, and spirit. --Lois W. Lutz, MS Alzheimer Education and Outreach Coordinator Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
