The demand for pharmacy technicians—and the number of positions—continues to grow. The demands on pharmacy technicians are increasing. With these demands, however, come many opportunities. These include specialization (intravenous preparations and compounding), mentoring, and ancillary activities (professional associations, drug ordering, and the Internet). Placement for competent pharmacy technicians has risen. Especially with the advent of the national certification examination, the impact of pharmacy technology on the marketplace has impressed pharmacy administrators in the community and institutional pharmacy environments. As the field of pharmacy technology grows, so do the opportunities. As you enter this career, you will become a vital part of this dynamic and fascinating world of the health professional.
In keeping with the dynamic movement of pharmacy practice, this revision of this textbook reflects additional needs dictated by changes in pharmacy. This textbook is dedicated to the professional development of students interested in this field. The scope of this text and its companion text, Pharmacy Technician Review and Test Preparation, further the commitment to providing a sound basis for technical skills and competence in providing the pharmacy services associated with pharmacy practice.
This text and its companion text fulfill the need to prepare for successful completion of national certification for pharmacy technicians. The format is user-friendly. Instead of the many chapters found in the original text, this format focuses on the distributive function of pharmacy practice, the drugs, and the pharmacy settings. Many new drugs have been added and some drugs have been deleted to keep pace and reflect the dynamic activity in pharmacy. In keeping with the movement to self-manage health care, a chapter on over-the-counter drugs has been added to prepare the pharmacy technician for a role in assisting individuals with non-prescription medication needs. The Pharmacy Technician COACH, the most recent addition to this textbook, introduces the reader to real excerpts of physician orders and the challenges associated with them.
Each area of study in the text supports and satisfies the needs of the Code of Ethics for Pharmacy Technicians, the Scope of Pharmacy Practice Project, and the Practice Standards of ASHP (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists). In addition, the scope of this text includes a basic knowledge to successfully complete the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
