For five decades, J. David Eshleman's passion has been to bring unchurched people to healthy congregations. By encouraging and equipping believers and pastors to reach out to neighbors in the communities around their church buildings, Eshleman has helped numerous churches grow from a few dozen members to, in some cases, several hundred. This book challenges congregations to make disciples not just around the world but in their own backyards.

J. David Eshleman served as a pastor and church planter for 50 years at numerous Mennonite churches in the U.S. He helped Capital Christian Fellowship near Washington, D.C., grow from 45 members to more than 400. He holds degrees from Eastern Mennonite Seminary and a doctorate from Ashland Theological Seminary.

Review:

Dave Eshleman's practical suggestions for congregational revitalization address the spiritual, social, and structural dimensions of corporate life. His choice of stories and illustrations reflects a model for working in a local cultural context. He offers a process for discernment and discovery rather than a program for implementation. His rhythm of reflection on text and context, along with discussion questions, makes this a useful resource for congregations wishing to focus their missional identity and purpose. --Norm Voth, Mennonite Church Manitoba

This is a must read book for leaders who want to set people free to use their gifts for building the church. By emphasizing the inclusion of new members in decision making, Eshleman encourages leaders to think outside the box. His biblical framework encourages attention to the dynamics of love, fellowship, forgivness, and prayer for believers who plant churches, revitalize existing ones, and witness to the unchurched. Eshleman's own experience of church planting informs this how-to guide for engaging evangelism through relationships with the unchurched in our neighborhoods. --Myron S. Augsburger, author of The Resurrection Life: The Power for Jesus Today
