When a little boy enters a department store, the doorman shows him everything from cosmetics and clocks to toys

Ages 5^-8. "Welcome to Dinsmore, the world's greatest store! / Whatever you search for, we've got it, and more." The doorman of an imaginary department store greets a young boy who wanders in out of the rain and takes him on a magnificent nine-floor tour of fascinating items and services. The text is lengthy, and beginning readers will undoubtedly have difficulty with the often flowery language and references to unfamiliar people and places ("We've fragrances formerly lost to the past, / Like eau de cologne of King Louis the Last" ). As a read-aloud, however, the book can't be beat: the rhyming text and humorous cartoon illustrations are delightful. Lauren Peterson
