Gr 5-7-The format of these books is appealing. The first sections offer an overview of each country's history, geography, economy, people, and culture. Sidebars give comments on related text and/or photographs, and indicate pages where topics are covered in fuller detail in the body of the books. This device makes it possible for the authors to avoid an encyclopedic approach, yet lead children to further information on historical events, famous people, activities, etc. Final chapters that highlight relations with North America are an added plus. The books conclude with a page of basic facts; a glossary of foreign words and English counterparts; and suggestions for further reading, videos, and Web sites. The full-color photos on every page are outstanding and the style of writing is graceful. Russia does have a blooper: the population is given as 1.5 million! There are also several puzzling assertions such as the one stating that coal, gas, and oil reserves "supported the economic achievements of the U.S.S.R. until the 1950s," when in fact many of the Siberian resources were developed and earned valuable hard currency for many decades after that. Likewise, there are some statements in France that could be misconstrued. Nevertheless, both books will be valuable additions to collections because they do sparkle with an array of topics, presenting a fine overview of the countries, including attention to regional differences.-Elizabeth Talbot, University of Illinois, Champaign
