Grade 6-8-This attractive set presents excellent overviews of national histories. The alphabetical entries offer the country's common name first, followed by the official name. Each also includes a small world map in the upper-left corner of the page showing the location of the country opposite a full-color reproduction of the flag. Standard facts appear in sidebars. Articles vary in length from 1 page for Albania to 12 pages for Germany to 23 for the U.S. The entries are liberally illustrated with captioned, high-quality color photos that offer glimpses of scenery, events, buildings, and native peoples. The text is quite readable, though its Australian origin sometimes results in vocabulary or sentence structure that some American readers may find unusual. In addition to the table of contents, volume one contains a map of each continent and the world, and a list of international organizations. Spines are labeled and numbered. This set differs from The World Book Encyclopedia ofPeople and Places (World Book, 2002) and Lands and Peoples (Grolier, 2003) in that it focuses on the history of nations. There is an amazing amount of information in each of these slim, accessible volumes.-Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS
