British author Thomas Burke was born in 1886 in London. He lived with his uncle when his father died, and he began working at age 16. By 1901, he published his first professional written work entitled "The Bellamy Diamonds" but he did not obtain acclaim as an author until Limehouse Nights in 1916. Burke developed his descriptions of London life throughout his later works. Burke died in 1945. His short story "The Hands of Ottermole" was later voted the best mystery of all time by critics in 1949.
