Seller: Borkert, Schwarz und Zerfaß GbR, Berlin, Germany
Condition: Gut. 264 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Somewhat stained and bleached and slightly damaged jacket, otherwise good and clean. / Etwas angeschmutzter und verblichener sowie leicht beschädigter Umschlag, sonst gut und sauber. - The concern of this book is with the past. It deals with the social, political, economic, and religious factors that combined to single out the Jews as a people apart from the rest of the worlda people that was different from the society in which it lived and that refused to conform to its social demands; a people that supported governments even though they were unpopular and that refused to join native populations bent on revolution; a people that was for the most part disgustingly poor, yet sent money to some faraway religious sanctuary; a people that insisted that its religion was superior to any other and that refused to be convinced or coerced into believing anything else. As long as he differed from his neighbors, the Jew was the target for all of societys ills. He could have avoided most of his misfortunes by assimilating into that society, but had he done so, he would no longer have been that which he was born. The historical period covered by this book begins with the appearance of the Hebrews as a people and ends at the start of the Middle Ages, when Islam initiated its bid for European domination. Although anti-Semitism has its most virulent forms during the Middle Ages and the Nazi holocaust of the twentieth century, the roots of this phenomenon go back thousands of years to the formidable era when the Jew and the Gentile first encountered one another. Accordingly, the development of Judaism during this lengthy period is discussed in the context of the social history of these times, for it is only by taking into account the events which shaped Western society that the emergence of anti-Semitism as a social phenomenon can be understood.
