This bibliography is intended to serve as a basic guide to the literature for general readers, students, and scholars interested in the study of American Indians - Native Americans. A vast body of literature about Native Americans has accumulated over the years. The sheer mass of this material often proves a serious obstacle to scholarly and casual inquiry alike. From this mass of material, however, approximately 1,100 books, articles, government documents, and other written materials in twenty-seven fields of study have been selected and annotated for this guide. Lengthy annotations identify the tribal territories, time frame, and point of view of each work. No attempt has been made to be exhaustive in the coverage of any topic. The goal is to present a selection of scholarly materials in the varied disciplines that will be useful both as a source of immediate information and as a reference tool that will lead investigators further into the intricacies of individual fields. All of the selections are in English. They range geographically across the United States, including Alaska, and chronologically from ancient eras to contemporary life and thought. Canadian writings treating those tribes located along, and spilling over, the United States-Canadian border have been included, as well as important works about Canadian natives. Important works about Central and South America and Mexico have also been included. For the most part, however, this guide is limited to Native Americans of the United States - a restriction dictated by the large number of materials available. [From the Preface]
