From planes, trains, and automobiles to archery, quilting, skiing, and woodworking, Munson provides a thorough description of each hobby or pastime, including the rules and the necessary tools for participation.

Seventy percent of American households have a member with a hobby. Munson has assembled 94 of today's most frequently pursued leisure-time activities in one volume to give those in search of a hobby ample information to make an informed choice.
Arranged from Antiques and Collectibles to Writing, the format is the same--a concise history detailing the hobby's origin and development followed by a variety of unique descriptive information. For example, each sport entry discusses rules, equipment, playing strategies, scoring, and game variations. Similarly, animal hobbies (Dogs, Cats, Horses, etc.) are given uniform treatment. A description of general characteristics of the animal is followed by specific breeds and breeding techniques, training methods, and uses, such as work, house pets, breeding/show, service (to blind and deaf humans), and sport. The Aviation chapter delves into the technical aspects of aircraft maintenance, flight planning, and navigational systems and then briefly mentions spectator events and museums. Cooking includes directions for specific methods (frying, broiling, roasting, etc.), and a word about cookbooks. A brief list of related materials--books, periodicals, and associations--for the hobby closes each chapter.
Favorite Hobbies and Pastimes is best used as a complementary volume to the Hobbyist Sourcebook (Gale, 1990), which treats the same subject entirely differently. The Gale book directs the hobbyist to sources of information--books, periodicals, organizations, associations, libraries, museums, suppliers, databases, and more--on 43 hobbies. Munson focuses on describing the hobby. Public libraries will want both publications in order to provide a well-rounded treatment of this popular subject.
