9780838909010: Achieving National Board Certification for School Library Media Specialists: A Study Guide (ALA Editions)

To achieve the distinction of National Board Certification, school library media specialists face daunting challenges requiring hard work, teaching knowledge, collaborative skills, organizational ability, and courage. Put a friendly mentor in your corner! This study guide coaches school library media specialists through exam specifics. Author, librarian and educator Gail Dickinson has been on the front lines since the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) introduced library media standards in 2000. Her work has helped bring the rigorous certification process into perspective, answer questions, and allay concerns of those going for certification or considering it. Whether you are considering National Board certification, in the process of achieving certification, or want to stay current on the best practices in teaching, this book is for you. In this hands-on resource, Dickinson breaks down a complex and intimidating process into friendly, bite-sized pieces, and: shows how to get started, be organized, and stay on track with checklists, tips, and exercises; outlines proven approaches to collaborative instruction, literature appreciation, and integrating technology; and highlights practical ways to document accomplishments, a critical requirement. Whether used as a workshop guide, for reference or self-study, this accessible guide prepares current candidates (and those in the process) to face the Board assessment experience. It's filled with inspiring examples and advice from people who have been through it and can cheer you on to success.

About the Author:

Gail Dickinson, formerly a school library media specialist and library supervisor, is currently assistant professor and school library media educator at the Darden School of Education at Old Dominion University. She has been involved in the NBPTS from the release of the library media standards in 2000, leading workshops, developing and co-hosting the AASL forum, and chairing the AASL National Board interest group. She also taught a 3-credit graduate course on preparing for National Board Certification at San Jose State University. She holds a MSLS from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and PhD from the University of Virginia.

From School Library Journal:

A clear, accessible handbook. Dickinson provides the background of the program and reviews the best practices that must be utilized in everyday school librarianship, including collaboration, appreciation of literature, and technology integration. She then explains the certification process, including how to prepare for and complete the four prescribed entries. The text is written in reader-friendly, casual language, with lots of comments, suggestions, and humorous anecdotes from candidates found on Web-based discussion sites. A chapter on banking helps candidates envision certification as an extended process (one to four years) rather than as a one-time pass/fail situation. Candidates bank successful scores and can retake unsuccessful ones until the process is complete. Charts, helpful hints in shaded Food for Thought boxes, and extensive chapter notes are included. Potential candidates would do well to combine this guide with Peggy Milam's National Board Certification in Library Media:A Candidate's Journal (Linworth, 2005) to obtain both the professional and personal perspectives on the process.-Mary R. Hofmann, Rivera Middle School, Merced, CA
