About the Author:

Paula M. Singer is the president and principal consultant of The Singer Group, Inc., a management-consulting firm she founded in 1983. She provides compensation consulting, strategic planning and alignment, organization design and development, performance management, leadership development, and other ser vices to clients in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Libraries throughout the country have engaged The Singer Group to conduct a variety of studies and projects. She is the author of the first edition of this book and coauthor of Winning with Library Leadership: Enhancing Services through Connection, Contribution, and Collaboration (with Christi Olson) and Human Resources for Results (with Jeanne Goodrich), all published by the American Library Association. Paula is also a frequent speaker at ALA, PLA, and state library association conferences and events.

Laura L. Francisco is a senior consultant with The Singer Group, Inc. For nearly fifteen years, she has provided compensation, classification, performance management, and other consulting ser vices to clients in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. She has consulted with many library systems across the country to develop and implement compensation and classification systems designed to meet the particular needs of the library system. Francisco is a member of the American Library Association and has been certified as a Professional in Human Resources by the Society for Human Resource Management.

From Library Journal:

Filling a void in the library management literature, this readable manual by a consultant with experience in helping large and small library systems design and facilitate compensation plans ably guides administrators through the steps involved, from the decision to undertake a compensation study through implementation and administration of a compensation program. In addition to serving as a how-to, the book includes thoughtful discussions of the philosophy of compensation plans; issues and trends in compensation; and the importance of tailoring any plan to the particular library and its mission, environment, and culture. As the author tells us in the introduction, "The design and implementation of compensation and pay plans are as much an art as a science." Both art and science are respected here. Highly recommended for anyone responsible for human resources in libraries. Lyn Hopper, Chestatee Regional Lib., Dawsonville, GA
