About the Author:

Kathleen Horning is a librarian at the Cooperative Children's Book Center, a library of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and has been a member of the Newbery Award Committee. Maria Salvadore, an independent consultant, has served as the Children's Services Coordinator for the District of Columbia Public Library and as a member of the Caldecott Award Committee. Roger Sutton is editor-in-chief at The Horn Book, Inc. and has served on the Newbery Award Committee.

From Booklist:

Drawing largely from material published in The Horn Book, this guide includes two reviews of the current Newbery and Caldecott medal winners; reprints the speech of each award-winning writer and illustrator; and provides a biographical essay on the recipient. Three introductory essays put the award winners in perspective. Roger Sutton's intriguing "Looking beyond the Winner's Circle" considers the books of each year (1986-2000) that may not have won the award, but received critical acclaim from reviewers and librarians and an enthusiastic response from children. Maria B. Salvadore and Kathleen T. Horning introduce the Newbery and Caldecott medal-winning books, approaching their subjects chronologically and commenting cogently on each book. Don't look here for the honor books, which are not listed in this volume. However, the winners really shine under the multiple spotlights provided. Carolyn Phelan
