André Dominé, in spite of his French name, was born in Hamburg and started as early as 14 to write for newspapers and revues. The great change in his life came when he moved to a winegrowers village in the prehills of the Eastern Pyrenees in 1981, simply looking for sunshine. Already a confirmed wine drinker, he learned working a vineyard and making wine at the tiny cooperative of his village.
He became the first German journalist writing on the - at that time - unknown estates of the South of France and had the chance to be part of a complete revolution in wine quality. His first book on wine was dedicated to the Roussillon region where he lives and came out in 1986. Since then, he has published 12 other books and contributed to a great number of German magazines like essen & trinken, Der Feinschmecker, Wein Gourmet, Alles über Wein, Weinwirtschaft,Weinwelt, VINUM, Südafrika Magazin and others.
In 2001, he recieved the first ever German edition of the famous Champagne Lanson Prize as Best Wine Journalist in Germany. In the same year his encyclopédia WINE with photos from Armin Faber got the Prix Edmond de Rothschild as best winebook in France, and the American version recieved the James Beard Gold Award as best winebook in the States in the following spring. In 2005, he published again with Armin Faber the photo book Wine Landscapes of the World which was elected "Best Wine Book of the World" by Gourmand Cook Book Awards in spring 2006.
For the newly revised and updated edition of WINE, Armin Faber and he especially visited the states of California, Oregon, and Washington again. Like Armin, he loves jazz - his wife plays saxophon in two bands -, but he is especially fond of the evenings when Armin sings the blues and they share a bottle of wine.
Both novice and experienced wine lovers will savor this lushly illustrated, gorgeously packaged introduction to the world of wine. After opening with a brief history of this intoxicating potable, it covers the basics on choosing, serving, tasting, and storing wine. Readers are then whisked into the vineyard to see how grapes are cultivated and into the winery to observe the bottling process. The book's focus then shifts from an overview of its subject to a detailed look at 13 different wine-producing regions and countries. Coverage of each region or country includes a historical overview, detailed growing maps, production details and statistics, and a selection of wine producers with samples of their labels. The Oxford Companion to Wine (LJ 12/94) will still be the first choice for libraries needing a basic reference to this subject, but with its sleek visual look and abundant illustrations and photographs, this volume by Domine (who edited Culinaria France) will be a valuable counterpart to this standard source. Recommended for both academic and large public libraries. John Charles, Scottsdale P.L., AZ
