This first Western (written under a pseudonym) by a mystery writer combines the two genres in a timeworn plot. Stephen Payne rides into the town of Favor to investigate the alleged suicide of his younger brother Art, a task made difficult by the villains who run the law and the town. The characters are caricatures and the action incredible, even impossible at times. The novel possesses two pleasant features: the author's appeal to the senses in his evocation of the sounds, sights, and scents of town and country and the obvious enjoyment he displays in his descriptions of animals. If this work is meant seriously, it is poor stuff, but readers who take it as a spoof of early Westerns may find some entertainment.
