Since I first watched the movies SOLDIER BLUE and A MAN CALLED HORSE, I've been intrigued by the history of the Cheyenne people. Hope's Captive relates the desperate exodus of the Northern Cheyenne people from the hated reservation to the homeland they love, the final journey in their long fight for freedom and peace. From the Inside Flap:
A LITTLE PROBLEM
"Ma’am, you’re not plannin’ to wear that, are you?" He tried to keep his voice neutral, but felt his lip curl as he looked her over. Her tight lips and annoyed glance would have warned him, even if he hadn’t just seen the knife strapped to her thigh through the slit in the skirt.
"I am," Caroline said, and shoved an armful of blankets at him. "Is that a problem?"
"Yes, it is. We’re not in Indian country yet, and until we are, the locals and other travelers will like us much better if you’re not dressed like a heathen."
She turned on him with a look that would have fried hardtack. Her eyes burned an unholy midnight blue, her cheeks flushed a becoming pink and her lips, pressed into a tight frown, turned cherry red. She was already a beautiful woman, but her beauty flared in anger, hitting him like an axe handle across the chest, leaving him breathless.
Damnation, he thought, finally inhaling a steady breath. I’m in big trouble.
Too late he remembered that she was rumored to have been the wife of a Cheyenne chief, and he knew she was very good with a knife. Perhaps heathen hadn’t been the best word to use.
