From the Back Cover:

In "The Sixth Shotgun," Leo Carver has been sentenced to hang in the town of Cañon Gap. He admitted to trying to hold up the stage, but when he saw his friend Mitch Williams riding shotgun, he rode off. Leo adamantly denies going back later to kill the driver and guard and steal the gold. Rock Bannon of "Showdown Trail" is wounded in an Indian attack, then rescued by an Oregon-bound wagon train. When the train stops to stock up on supplies, Morton Harper persuades the leaders to take an easier trail that will allow them to escape an Indian attack. Bannon knows all too well that if the train takes that trail, it will lead them straight into a war the pioneers can't win.

The title story, "West of the Tularosa," tells the tale of Ward McQueen, foreman of the Tumbling K ranch. The owner of the Tumbling K has made a deal with the owner of the Firebox spread to buy his ranch. But when McQueen and his crew come to take possession, they find the body of the previous owner riddled with bullet holes. According to the law, it's obvious that McQueen and his boys killed the man to claim possession of the Firebox.
