9780847685295: Romancing Antiquity

In this unique and comprehensive book, George McCarthy examines the influence of Greek philosophy, literature, arts, and politics on the development of twentieth-century German social thought. McCarthy demonstrates that the classical spirit vitalized thinkers such as Weber, Heidegger, Freud, Marcuse, Arendt, Gadamer, and Habermas. With the romancing of antiquity, they transformed their understanding of the modern self, political community, and Enlightenment rationality. By viewing contemporary social theory from the framework of the classical world, McCarthy argues, we are capable of thinking beyond the limits of modernity to new possibilities of human reason, science, beauty, and social justice.

About the Author:

George E. McCarthy teaches social theory, ethics, and political economy at Kenyon College. In 1994-95, he was a Senior Fulbright Research Fellow in Germany. Among his many books are Marx and the Ancients: Classical Ethics, Social Justice, and Nineteenth-Century Political Economy, Marx and Aristotle: Nineteenth-Century German Social Theory and Classical Economy, and Dialectics and Decadence: Echoes of Antiquity in Marx and Nietzsche.

Review:

An enormous amount of intellectual terrain... (Michael T. Jones, University of Kentucky Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences)

McCarthy has undertaken an enterprise of enormous scope and considerable interest. One of the virtues of his study is its cross-disciplinary approach. There is no postmodern critical gimmickry nor wild free-associationism. His approach is solid, clear, and heavily researched. He is obviously conversant with the major (and minor) figures who influenced Nietzsche and familiar, as well, with the work of the key interpreters of Nietzsche. In addition, there is the extensive and rather Teutonic critical apparatus of endnotes... This collection is a challenging introduction or a refreshing reminder of what existentialism is onto. (L. Howey, University of Wyoming Albert E. Gunn and Staff)

George McCarthy's latest work is ambitious . . . (Jonathan Sheehan, University of California H-Net: Humanities and Social Science Reviews Online)
