9780847686414: Analyzing the Different Voice: Feminist Psychological Theory and Literary Texts (New Feminist Perspectives)

The essays collected in Analyzing the Different Voice: Feminist Psychological Theory and Literary Texts apply influential, pathbreaking psychological studies about women's lives to literature. In their analyses of fictional portraits, contributors both challenge and confirm psychological theories about female identity, about 'connection/separation' as developmental catalysts, and about the impact of gender on 'voice,' moral decision-making, and epistemology in relation to classical and contemporary literary texts, written by both women and men.

Review:

Interesting, enlightening, and useful. (Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy)

The chapters themselves are a delight to read: the illuminating potential of the central concepts was creatively demonstrated. Through the lens of literary texts, these chapters succeed in illuminating the complexity, ambivalence and richness in women's experience and their primary relationship in a way which feminist social science has to struggle to achieve. These volumes display a coherence around clearly articulated themes which is enriched by the variety of approaches which different authors bring to bear on their subject. Valuable and important texts, not only for feminist psychology but as part of its contribution to feminist theory more generally... (Wendy Hollway, School of Psychology, University of Leeds Feminist Theory, Vol. 1 (1), April 2000)
