About the Author:
Emma Duprey de Sterling was born on January 27, 1920 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. She completed her bachelor's degree in Education at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus, where she later earned a Master's degree in Vocational Counseling. Duprey de Sterling worked in Puerto Rico's public education system both as a teacher and vocational counselor. For many years, she and her husband ran a succesful eatery. Her mastery of the culinary arts has gained her wide recognition as an artisan and credentials both from the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture and the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. She is well known for her outstanding efforts to promote and preserve our African heritage, and the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture has commended her for her contributions toward the development and preservation of the island's popular arts. In 2004, she was chosen as the Model Woman for the celebration of the 131st anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico, and was honored by the Municipality of Carolina, Puerto Rico, where she now lives.
