The price is a tipoff--this is a large, resplendent monograph on one aspect of the work of Colombia's most famous artist. These images help to explain why Botero can be considered one of Latin America's modern art "old masters": the subject matter is brilliant in terms of color and mood. The emphasis of the book is the illustrations, which are well produced and plentiful. Bonald's text is less satisfactory. He seems torn between obligatory art-historical analysis and a compulsion to reexplain the mystique of bullfighting. General collections should depend on Carter Ratcliff's Botero (Abbeville, 1980). The present work--Bonald is a former professor of Spanish literature at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and Bryn Mawr College--is meant for specialized art and research libraries or the individual enthusiast.
