Depicts nearly fifty gardens of various sizes throughout Mexico, many of them unknown to the public, and discusses their history and owners

Haas presents a variety of garden settings--private residences and public spaces from Alamos in the north to Villahermosa in Mexico's southern region. The area of Veracruz, particularly, with its fine climate and prime horticultural conditions, yields sublime examples of magical landscapes. These are lush gardens containing flora that can be looked on as only wondrous and exotic by anyone dwelling north of the tropical zones. Haas embellishes Nicholas Sapieha's photographs with descriptive passages, historical background, and engaging anecdotes about many of the unique personalities associated with the more than 40 featured gardens. A handsome volume and an informative garden tour that should interest travelers considering a Mexican sojourn. Alice Joyce
Since the days of Montezuma, with his army of gardeners at Chapultepec, the royal hunting lodge, Mexico has had a long tradition of grand and luxuriant gardens. Many are rarely seen by the public, since they are hidden behind high walls and closed gates or on the roofs of buildings. But noted author, journalist, and gardener Haas, along with photographer Sapieha, have obviously had access, visiting some 50 gardens, varying in size and splendor from tiny roof gardens to sprawling haciendas. Haas employs a smooth, seemingly effortless prose, and Sapieha's color photos are the work of a seasoned professional. However, plans of the gardens are not included, nor are lists of plants. Recommended for large collections.
