Join Dave and Jane as they blast off from their beautiful planet Zarp to take their Space Test in Advanced Rocketeering in the X-10 solar system!
To qualify as real space pilots on their world, they must travel through time and space investigating this new solar system and performing daring maneuvers in their spaceship, Minerva.
The X-10 system includes ten planets-- Mercury, Venus, Mars, Celestia, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
Dave and Jane travel through X-10 investigating each planet-- except Earth, that is, because Earth is inhabited by dinosaurs! Though they're instructed by the Zarp authorities to stay away from this dangerous place, that's exactly where they wind up-- with hilarious consequences for themselves and planet Earth.

Grade 1-4?In order to get their own spaceship, 10-year-olds Dave and Jane must pass their "Space Test in Advanced Rocketeering," and fly a spaceship on a specimen-collecting voyage to the X-10 solar system. With their "(Smart) Alec (know-it-all) Robot," their satellite Retriever dog, and a variety of useful hat-shaped space shuttles, the two venture far back in time and space. When they get to our solar system, they collect some of the desert dwellers of Mercury, the forest dwellers of Venus, and an "S-ski-Mo" family on Uranus. When they stop on the Earth's moon, a meteor shower forces the ship to a premature take-off and it crash lands on Earth, where the crew glimpses huge dinosaurs roaming before everything goes black. Days later, they emerge, and the dinosaurs are gone. The specimens they collected decide they like the weather on Earth and decide to stay. As for Jane and Dave, they repair their ship and get back to Zarp in time to pass their test. This whimsical picture book is full of visual humor and puns, making it appealing to children. The primitive comic-style illustrations in brightly toned colored pencil and watercolors are full of details and add greatly to the succinctly told "diary entries." Children will relish this wacky adventure, enjoy the bits of science information, and wait for more unlikely but fun escapades.?Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library
