One is always pleased to see a well- illustrated, substantial publication on Friedrich's art and life, but the format of this English-language version of a cata log for a 1984 exhibition held at the Cen tre Culturel du Marais in Paris actually works against our full appreciation of its content. The inventiveness of the layout in fact becomes somewhat irritating and makes the book hard to use. Neverthe less, the richness of the text and the very high quality of the many illustrations combine to make this the most compre hensive work in English now available on Friedrich and, thus, an important ac quisition for any collection with an inter est in 19th-century art.
