Throughout history people have observed or reported events or states which, though they have their origin in the human mind and in shared human experiences, are so out of the ordinary that they can be categorized as belonging to alternate states of consciousness (ASCs). These manifestations range from dreaming to religious ecstasy, amnesia to multiple personality, and include the varied results of hypnosis, drug-taking, near-death experiences, and encounters with extraterrestrials and flying saucers. They can be regarded as normal, socially recognizable events, or as psychotic aberrations--or anything in between. ASCs have frequently been put to use in pursuit of religious enlightenment, contact with the deceased, or simple escape from the harsh realities of everyday living, but their causes and origins remain obscure.
