Synopsis
Staffordshire bull terriers are game all-rounders, with a loyal following. First appearing in the Staffordshire Black Country in the 19th century, they were originally bred for bloodsports such as bullbating and dog-fighting, but their tenacious courage in these pursuits was tempered by their responsiveness to their owners. It is this combination of intelligence with courage which is the hallmark of the best of today's Stafford's.
The history of the breed, which forms almost half of this book, is bound up with England's Industrial Revolution and the hard life led by the Midlands working population; in such circumstances, a game dog could make the reputation of his owner in the restricted social climate which prevailed.
