Major contribution to the literature focussing on the formation of the South African working class, emphasizing African cultural practices adn African resistance as a shaping force. Using a range of archival sources, diaries memoirs, colonial newspapers and Zulu-English phrasebooks, the author is able to track, wherever possible in their own words, how workmen kept track of time, how tasks were structured, revealing everyday concerns and struggles as well as a set of patterned responses that unmistakably constituted an African work ethic. Review:
This short but assured and thoroughly researched study has a campaigning point to make: the Natal Africans, whom ignorant, racist settlers condemned as lazy, were in fact intelligent workers alert to exploit their scarcity value in a British colony desperate for labour. - Deborah Gaitskell in HISTORY Passionately and often persuasively argued, this book contributes a new, explicitly African-centred perspective to the already exciting historical literature on the creation of a South African working class.
