First published 1982. Matt coloured cover. No bumping, maybe a minor amount of shelf wear. The spine is tight, and the inside is immaculate. ## ## Roman Crafts and Industries - The coming of the Roman army to Britain had the effect of both stimulating existing crafts and introducing new ones. The troops had to be fed and supplied with equipment and the large numbers gave rise to correspondingly large orders and hence mass production. This book shows the wide range and great complexity of crafts that existed in Britain nearly two thousand years ago and includes sections on metal, stone, brick, textiles and leather, glass, and a variety of other crafts. The way in which metals are extracted from their ores is dealt with, as are the various techniques used to fashion metals into jewellery, household goods and other objects. The writer's own research into the brick and tile industry of Roma Britain have been drawn upon and this section contains several new ideas. The great skill of carpenters is demonstrated by the wide range of tools they used and the illustration f surviving wooden objects and timbering. There are brief sections on mosaics, was plaster, pottery, and the use of animal bone by craftsmen. The book is well illustrated with especially made photographs and drawings. ## ## About the author - Alan McWhirr is a senior lecturer at Leicester Polytechnic and since 1965 has been director of Excavations for the Cirencester Excavation Committee, in which capacity he has carried out large-scale and important excavations in Cirencester, the second largest town in Roman Britain. He was born in St Albans, the Roman Verulamium ? hence his interest in Roman archaeology. He read science at the University of Leicester, with a little archaeology and later did research and was awarded an MA. Elected a Fellow of the Society antiquaries in 1970, he has served on its council and is a member of the council of the society for the Promotion of Roman Studies. He is the author of a book on Rom Gloucestershire and has written papers for learned journals, including several on the production and distribution of tile and brick in Roman Britain, the subject of his recent research. ## ### YOU MAY FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING - Read on ## ## This is a new style of the Shire books, much more information, and the binding is in full colour glossy. The printing is much clearer on better quality paper, which will mean longevity in the years to come. Newer subjects and updated earlier Shire publications made it an exciting step forward. ## ## In 2007, the company was acquired by Oxford-based military history publisher Osprey and operated from Osprey's offices in Oxford. During 2008 Shire began a revamp of its list. Shire announced that several former Shire series: including Life Lines, Shire Garden History and History in Camera, would be absorbed into a new series called Shire Library. Retaining and expanding the numbering system used by the old album series, which has long formed the backbone of the Shire Library. Books in the Shire Library were to have a new series cover design, as would reissued books in the Archaeology and Egyptology series. Shire further announced that Shire's list of forthcoming publications would include an increased number of new titles, as well as reissues of out-of-print titles and new editions of existing titles.
