From the huge, tumbling wigs of the wealthy during the mid-seventeenth century, to the razor sharp instruments required for tooth pulling, blood letting and even amputation, the barber's shop has historically housed a plethora of intriguing tools and accessories. Bleeding bowls, bear's grease and beef marrow are just a few of the fascinating curiosities which - along with the more familiar clippers and false curls - constitute the history wig, hairdressing and shaving bygones.

As Education Officer for Norfolk Museums Service Gail Durbin gives talks both to school children and to adults. Her teaching deals with the whole range of exhibits in the county's museums and she first became interested in hairdressing bygones when she was involved with an exhibition on 'Health and Beauty' and discovered that little had been written on this subject.

A hundred years later, the fashion had spread down the social scale, and barbers kept a range of twenty or thirty styles together with the necessary blocks and curling irons for keeping them in trim. The wigmaker used a few specialised tools, but the wearer required stands, cases and powdering devices. The barber's trade once included tooth pulling, blood-letting and even amputations. The barber used cut-throat razors, strops, special bowls and mugs until the safety razor revolutionised shaving. Similarly, hair clippers and mechanised brushes made hair cutting easier. Once trimmed, the hair was dressed at various times with bear's greaser macassar oil or Brylcreem. The lavish application of hairdressings brought about the antimacassar to protect upholstered furniture. Women's hair has been subjected to heated curling tongs and huge permanent waving machines, teased with comb and brushes and secured with nets and grips. The Victorians aided thin hair with false Curls 'This book deals with these and 'the other varied equipment used on hair in the past and fills in the historical background.## ## Shire Books by Bloomsbury Publishing, a book publishing company based in London, England, and formerly by Shire Publications Ltd. and Osprey Publishing. Shire offers low-priced, concise non-fiction paperbacks on a wide range of subjects. Shire books cover antiques and collectables, motoring and rural history, archaeology and Egyptology, architecture, industrial history and many other topics.## ## They were founded in 1962 by John Rotheroe, the company based in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire. The first book published by Shire Publications was Discovering East Suffolk, a 24-page guide to the county through a series of five motoring routes and a gazetteer of the main towns and villages. They were given away to visitors via coach operators, local churches and tourist information points. The book was successful, and Shire publishers decided to sell the second edition because free copies were being sold, setting the template for the future of Shire. Over the following years, Shire expanded its Discovering series and launched several new series, including Lifelines, Shire Albums, Shire Archaeology and Shire Egyptology. ## ## In 2008, Shire began a revamp of its list. It announced that the former Shire series, including Life Lines, Shire Garden History and History in Camera, would be absorbed into a new series called Shire Library, which would retain and expand on the numbering system used by the old Album series, which has long formed the backbone of the Shire Library. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note.
