This book describes in mathematical terms the extraction of useful information from ESR spectra as applied to paramagnetic organic, inorganic and organometalic molecules. It lays a firm groundwork for understanding more sophisticated experiments, which the availability of newer commercial instruments has made possible. It takes the reader step by step through obtaining and interpretating ESR spectra of paramagnetic molecules. The mathematical basis of each observed phenomena are detailed and examples given. In particular there is a detailed discussion of 2nd order pertubation theory treatment of the Spin Hamiltonian for non-coincident G and A axes.

Review:

"I would also like to compliment you on the very fine production of the monograph." (University of Manchester, 10th September 2007 (Prof David Collison))

"It is a very welcome addition to the literature in the field of EPR spectroscopy....its approach is fresh and didactically sound. The book is accessible to a broader readership than existing textbooks. The selection of topics is well balanced. A student who reads through this book will acquire a solid repertoire of methods for interpreting even complicated EPR spectra....For experienced researchers the book is well suited as a dictionary of spectrum analysis....clear and simple figures are well suited for illustrating lectures. There are not many books that I could recommend with such a good conscience as this one. Personally, I now regard it as an essential item on my bookshelf." (Angewandte Chemie, International Edition, 2008, 47 2913-2914 (Gunnar Jeschke))

Book Description Royal Society of Chemistry. Hardcover. Condition: New. This item is printed on demand. 242 pages. Electron Spin Resonance covers the obtaining, analysing and interpreting of cw X-band ESR spectra of molecules with unpaired electron (s). The purpose of the book is to describe in mathematical terms the extraction of useful information from ESR spectra about the interaction of unpaired electrons with atoms in the molecules being studied. A reader familiar with quantum mechanics should gain a thorough understanding of the origins of the phenomena which make ESR spectra possible. The information that can be obtained from the spectra are explained in detail and in a logical step-by-step fashion. Examples of spectra of organic, inorganic and organometallic molecules, both in solution and in frozen solution are shown, analysed and interpreted and the mathematical basis of this interpretation clearly presented. The examples start with straightforward cases and proceed to more complicated ones. The ESR of biradicals, triplet states and other systems with more than one unpaired electron is also addressed. Particular attention is paid to the analysis and interpretation of spectra obtained from frozen solutions of paramagnetic organometallic compounds in which the g-matrix and the molecular axes are non-coincident. This book lays a firm groundwork for understanding more sophisticated experiments, which the availability of newer commercial instruments have made possible. This item ships from La Vergne,TN.
