After a period of interest in old clocks, the author became fascinated with the idea of building up a representative collection of pocket watches over the last two hundred and fifty years of their use. Starting modestly with twentieth-century examples the plan gradually burrowed into history to cover pieces illustrating the whole of the nineteenth century. Eventually most of the eighteenth century was also represented. The collection has essentially a Liverpool bias showing that this part of the country was second only to London in the previously prosperous watch trade. For practical reasons the collection is one of everyday, commonplace watches likely to be found in the Englishman's pocket, whether locally made or imported, rather than rarities and prestige pieces suitable for museums.
