1987, hardcover edition (published simultaneously in New York and London), Barnes and Noble Books, New Jersey. 204 pages. At the time of publication, the author was Director of English Studies at Cambridge. Here he provides in-depth analysis on the fact that the novel has to do with "the authenticity of being." He feels that novels these days are deeply moral, stories about individuals who matter, and the problems facing those individuals in today's world. He also feels that forms of corruption often dominate our lives, producing confusion in the extreme. Chapters are devoted to falsity in the modern novel, an extensive look at Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, A Passage to India, and Mansfield Park. Interesting 3-page bibliography, extensive notes at the end of each chapter.
