Synopsis
When Hitler came to power in 1933 and the socialist movement was forced underground, Willy Brandt made the decision to leave his native Lübeck and continue the fight against Nazism abroad. He lost his German citizenship and became a Norwegian; but neither his change of domicile nor nationality diminished his burning ambition to work actively towards the establishment of a free, democratic, and socialist Germany. In fact, the years in exile – mainly spent in Scandinavia – gave him the opportunity to find his own feet, to put his political theories and energies to the practical test, and allowed his socialist convictions to come to full maturity. Of particular importance in this respect is his concern for achieving a state of balance between individual rights and the common good, both nationality and on the international plane. His active concern for such issues during the Hitler period are now bearing practical fruit in his enthusiasm for a broader-based EEC and his efforts towards a détente with Moscow.
The book offers a unique insight into the growth to political maturity of a man whose impact on the European and international scene is increasing almost daily. Brandt himself has provided introductions to each of the chapters and contributed a Foreword specially written for the English edition. A biographical introduction by the Hon. Terence Prittie, bibliographical notes and a full index are designed to enhance the value of the work as a source book of the recent past.
