THE TRAITORS is a study of treason--a penetrating examination of the type of traitor whom the author describes as "a man who is not a professional spy, nor a turncoat politician, nor out essentially for personal gain, but a self-appointed idealist who possesses the sort of power that formerly only belonged to governments, and is determined to use it."
The three men whose acts are re-created--Allan Nunn, Klaus Fuchs and Bruno Pontecorvo--are such men. They were physicists of exceptional ability, as such they were in a position to divulge secrets of incalculable value to the Soviets, which they did. Alas, the list of traitors did not stop with them but continues on to this day.
