Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Text in English. 375 pp. Scratches and a small tear on the dust jacket. Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678), together with Rubens and Van Dyck, was one of the great Flemish Baroque masters of the seventeenth century. But unlike Rubens and Van Dyck, Jordaens was not a court painter, nor was he a member of the aristocracy or intellectual élite. His entire working life was spent in Antwerp where, as a respected member of the bourgeoisie, he was a popular and successful artist, his commissions ranging from altarpieces to tapestry design, and from portraits to allegorical ceiling-pieces. Although he did not travel to Italy, as did many of his contemporaries, Jordaens's work reflects the influence of Caravaggio, Veronese, Bassano and other Italian artists. However, without doubt, Jordaens's chief inspiration was his fellow-countryman Rubens, in whose footsteps he followed closely, striving to emulate his compositions and technique. With the death of Rubens in 1640 and Van Dyck in 1641, Jordaens's popularity reached its peak. Yet, ironically. with the resulting rise in commissions, the quality of his work began to decline, and towards the end of his career an increasing amount of work was executed by his studio, under his direction. Jordaens's affiliation with Rubens has led to false attributions and confusion between the two artists, In addition, the developing role of Jordaens's studio has clouded any assessment of the true quality of Jordaens's work, Carrying on the tradition of the standard reference by Max Rooses (1908) and the monographs by P. Buschmann Jr (1905) and Van Puyvelde (1953), Professor d'Hulst analyses critically Jordaens's output, including the large number of works which have recently come to light. He also clarifies which are authentic and defines the high standard of Jordaens's artistic ability. This monograph includes a fully documented account of the artist's life and the stylistic and thematic development of his work as a painter and a draughtsman. It is illustrated throughout in chronological order, with the exception of portraits which have been allocated their own chapter. The volume concludes with an index of collections, subjects and a general index. Seller Inventory # 4451
