From back cover: "The book describes the ethnology of the Gurungs of the Nepal Himalayas especially their social groupings, and examines conflict and the effects of change upon a particular Gurung village. The Gurungs display a remarkable internal unity as an ethnic group, despite the unusual differences of economic and political status between individuals. However, Prof. Messerschmidt detects an underlaying tension between two sub-tribes, the Sora Jat and the Char Jat, which is rooted in history but aggravated by recent economic and political change at the centers of trade and government in Nepal. The Gurungs' struggle to come with the inroads of modernity is reflected in the intensification of conflict in the village gut is finally resolved by a change in leadership." Based on field research conducted by Don Messerschmidt in 1971-72 for his PhD Dissertation. Aris & Phillips Ltd. 1976. First soft cover edition. Rare. Cover in reddish brown depicting a Gurung man playing a traditional drum. Cover, spine, and back cover show shelf wear with slight damage at the top and bottom of the spine.
