From Library Journal:

Schlossstein, author of the well-received Trade War ( LJ 5/1/84), here compares the condition of the United States to that of Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and the Philippines in five crucial areas--commerce, politics and government, education, the family, and national security. His popularly styled analysis draws upon his own observations, stimulating interviews with U.S. and East Asian leaders, and current scholarship to explain the startling successes of these countries, America's relative decline, and prescriptions for its revitalization. Schlossstein concludes, as have many others, that the next century will be a "Pacific century," but one that the United States can and should dominate if the necessary sacrifices are made and incentives given. Recommended to public libraries and undergraduate collections for readers pursuing the arguments of Paul Kennedy's The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers ( LJ 12/87) and James Schlesinger's America at Century's End ( LJ 5/15/89).

From Publishers Weekly:

In this clarion call to action, financial consultant Schlossstein ( Trade War ) suggests that U.S. economic decline relative to that of Japan and other East Asian countries is linked to our diploma-mill school system, the fragmented American family, a backward manufacturing base, a political system beholden to special interests and an outdated global security strategy. The author puts forth as possible reforms a national sales tax, "sin" taxes on alcohol and tobacco, restoration of investment tax credits, greater use of flextime and paid parental work leave, structural educational changes such as teacher-teams and school self-management. Globally, he advocates scaling down the number of U.S. troops overseas and argues that East Asian countries should shoulder more of the cost of regional military security. Schlossstein's optimism for bringing about change is infectious.
