David Strelan's God For Us: an Introduction to Lutheran Teaching is an out of print Australian book. It is a handbook to guide teens and adult converts to Lutheranism through Martin Luther's Small Catechism. I have used it in the past and recently purchased three copies because it is the only acceptable publication I have been able to locate to date. It is not as orthodox in Lutheran confessionalism as it could be but well within the range of acceptability. What is alarming is that no other publication for teens and adults exists. By saying this I convict myself as one too lazy to write my own catechism. Historically, pre-teens in Lutheran congregations in the United States have undertaken two years of catechism in preparation for confirmation as fully communicant members but no such tradition exists for adult converts, particularly those who convert from other Christian churches. They expect the catechetical process to be shorter and Strelan's book allows for a shorter catechism period, not that it is justified in all cases. American pastors should not be wary merely because of the book's county of origin. Australia is the home of excellent Lutheran theologians such as John Kleinig and Greg Lockwood as well as the late confessional giant, Herman Sasse.
