Book Description Scolar Press, London, first edition, 1979, 1979. Cloth, 4to, 29 cm, xxix pp, 340 leaves of facsimile, 2 colour plates From the introduction: "Fairfax 16 is a nearly perfectly preserved example of a manuscript produced to order by a commercial scriptorium or bookseller (in either Oxford or London) for a single owner belonging to the landed gentry. Assembled from 'booklets', it is not quite an edition de luxe or a 'commission'. But there is nothing mediocre about the standard of parchment or the quality of ornament. It is a good gentleman's library copy which has been provided with a beautiful full-page illumination (commissioned by the owner or by him through an agent) from the hand of an important artist, the Abingdon Missal Master (School of William Abell), some eleven years earlier than the Abingdon commission. The bulk of the poetic material derives from the world of 'courtly experience' and concerns itself with sophisticated morality and the trials and tribulations of fin amors - those concepts and imaginative experiences which reflect the social and literary refinements of the 'lettered chivalry' of the time. The authors well known at the time of the manuscript's being produced include Geoffrey Chaucer, his friend Sir John Clanvowe, John Lydgate and Thomas Hoccleve. From nearer the time of the manuscript's production (c. 1450) there is -one Prayer of Lydgate's from 1430 and one poem of a living poet, Charles of Orleans, who had been released from English custody some ten years before the writing of Fairfax 16." Covers lightly fingersoiled with minor marks and slight fading to spine. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-41823
