Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Facsimile Edition. A facsimile edition of the manuscript from 1870, introduced by Dr Roy Strong and Joyce Irene Whalley. Published in 1981 in this trade edition, following a 1980 Limited Edition - Morris's famous dedication to Georgia, wife of his best friend Edward Burne-Jones. Written, illustrated and decorated throughout by the Pre-Raphaelite artists Edward Burne-Jones, Charles F. Murray and William Morris himself. ***Near fine in the second state binding of smooth beige cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles on a flat spine. The boards are clean and unmarked, with just a little creasing to the top and tail of the spine. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Page block edges clean. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. No creases or tears. No foxing. Pages clean. Printed on nice quality paper. ***In a very good illustrated dustwrapper, which is complete with just some light edge wear and creasing, mainly at the top and tail of the spine. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, and is the second issue - with the original publisher's printed price of £8.95 (we also have a copy priced at £7.95). No serious creases, and no chips or tears. There is some uneven browning to the pale cream colouring (please see scans). ***54 pages - 245mm x 167mm. ***'William Morris, poet, socialist writer, and artist-craftsman, was a designer of furnishings and interiors, a printer and a calligrapher. As calligrapher he produced four manuscript books for Georgy, the wife of his closest friend Edward Burne-Jones. "A Book of Verse"', written in 1870, is the first and arguably the most beautiful, and it is printed here throughout in full colour and gold. The book is extraordinarily fresh and alive, and shows that visionary blending of medieval and modern which marks Morris's work. The decorations - flowers, leaves, circling and twining tendrils, branches and blossoms - invade the page and overrun the lines of verse in a free, passionate, celebration of love and spring. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A first trade edition of the facsimile printing of "A Book of Verse", in very nice collectable condition. A beautifully produced book. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 9062
