British TV producer Saltman provides readers with a clearly written, personal account of the production of Waldheim, a TV program made by Thames Television as a coproduction with Home Box Office. The reader is provided with insights into the joys and anguish of producing a TV show, as well as thoughtful and dispassionate reflections on the difficulty of assessing Kurt Waldheim's wartime record. Almost half the book comprises sometimes tedious extracts from the TV script. Purchase of this book should be made more for its discussion of the television industry, particularly the challenge of producing an objective documentary (as contrasted to a "trial by television"), rather than for its analysis of the Waldheim inquiry. For more on the Waldheim case, see Shirley Hazzard's Countenance of Truth , reviewed in this issue, p. 96.--Ed.
