With the final survivors of the first generation of AC Electric Locomotives, the Classes 86 and 87, now coming to the end of their operational career and with most early EMU designs also now consigned to history, this is a good time to produce a pictorial historical retrospective of the AC Electric stock employed over this period the book includes some 200 mono and colour illustrations recording the evolution of the AC Locomotive and EMU fleet since the late 1950s. The principle AC routes in the country are the East and West Coast Main Lines with their associated loops and braches in the West Midlands, Yorkshire and Scotland and the lines through East Anglia from London to Norwich and Kings Lynn.

Book Description OPC Oxford Publishing Company, Hersham Surrey United Kingdom, 2007. Hard Cover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. First Edition. 128 pages prof ill colour and b/w photos - Although main line electrification was considered from the early 20th century onwards, it was not until much later in the century that this became a reality. On the Southern Railway, main line electrification was achieved through an extension of the existing third-rail schemes. On the LNER, it was decided to adopt 1500v DC (direct current) for the electrification of the Sheffield-Manchester via Woodhead line. This scheme was delayed by the war and the electrified Woodhead route did not open until the early 1950s. The British Railways Modernisation Plan of 1955 called for the introduction of 25kv AC (alternating current) services over the West Coast main line. The first section of this was energised in 1959. Over the next four decades, the 25kv network expanded, culminating in the electrification of the East Coast main line from Kings Cross to Edinburgh shortly before the privatisation of BR. With the ongoing programme of upgrading the West Coast main line allied to the recent introduction of Virgins Pendolino stock, the 25kv network has had almost 50 years of development and success. A considerable variety of AC stock, both locomotives and EMUs, have seen service over the 50 years. With the final survivors of the first generation of AC electrics locomotives, the Classes 86 and 87, now coming to the end of their operational career and with most early EMU designs also now consigned to history, this is a good time to produce a pictorial historical retrospective of the AC electric stock employed over this period. Compiled by Colin Marsden, one of Britains foremost experts on the subject of modern traction and one of the best-known railway photographers and authors in the country, AC Electrics includes some 200 mono and colour illustrations recording the evolution of the AC locomotive and EMU fleet since the late 1950s. The principal AC routes in the country are the East and West Coast Main Lines with their associated loops and branches in the West Midlands, Yorkshire and Scotland and the lines through East Anglia from London to Norwich and Kings Lynn.
